A Study to Assess the Knowledge of Applying Restraint to A Psychiatric Patient Among 4th Year B.SC. Nursing Students in Smt. Nagarathnamma College of Nursing

Title: A Study to Assess the Knowledge of Applying Restraint to A Psychiatric Patient Among 4th Year B.SC. Nursing Students in Smt. Nagarathnamma College of Nursing

Abstract: Introduction: The use of restraints in psychiatric care is a critical but ethically sensitive
practice aimed at preventing harm during episodes of aggression, agitation, or risk of self injury. Although restraints may be necessary in emergencies, their improper or uninformed use
can cause physical harm, psychological trauma, and violation of patient rights. Nurses, as
frontline caregivers, must possess adequate knowledge and ethical understanding to ensure safe
and compassionate application of restraints.
Objectives: The study was conducted to assess the level of knowledge among 4th year B.Sc.
Nursing students regarding the application of restraints to psychiatric patients and to identify
factors associated with knowledge levels. The research also aimed to highlight gaps in training
and provide evidence for improving psychiatric nursing education.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted, and data were collected from 70
fourth-year B.Sc. Nursing students at Smt. Nagarathnamma College of Nursing, Bengaluru. A
structured self-administered questionnaire containing 30 knowledge-based items was used.
Responses were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics to evaluate knowledge
levels and associations with demographic factors.
Results: Findings revealed that 47.1% of students had adequate knowledge, 35.7% had
moderate knowledge, and 17.1% demonstrated inadequate knowledge of restraint application.
The mean knowledge score was 17.36 (SD = 6.78), with scores ranging between 4 and 27.
Socioeconomic status was significantly associated with knowledge levels (p = 0.025), whereas
no significant association was found with gender, age, marital status, family income, or
residential status.
Conclusion: The study concludes that while most students demonstrated moderate to
adequate knowledge of restraint application, gaps remain that could impact clinical practice.
Strengthening the nursing curriculum with simulation-based training, ethical and legal
frameworks, and de-escalation strategies is essential to prepare students for safe, patient centered psychiatric care.

Abstract: PROBLEM STATEMENT:
“A STUDY TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF HOMESICKNESS AMONG THE 1
ST YEAR
GNM NURSING STUDENTS AT SELECTED OF NURSING COLLEGE IN
BANGLORE.”
INTRODUCTION:
Homesickness is a common emotional experience among students who move away from their
homes for the first time, particularly in professional courses like General Nursing and
Midwifery (GNM). First-year nursing students often face stress due to a new environment,
academic pressure, and separation from family, which can impact their emotional well-being
and academic performance. Assessing homesickness is crucial to provide timely
psychological support and create a healthy learning atmosphere.
OBJECTIVES:
1. To assess the level of homesickness among 1st year GNM nursing students.
2. To identify factors contributing to homesickness.
3. To explore coping strategies adopted by students.
4. To assess the impact of home sickness in students' well-being and academic performance.
METHODOLOGY:
This study will be done using a survey to understand how homesick the 1st year GNM
students feel. A group of students from a selected nursing school in Bangalore will be chosen
through purposive sampling. A questionnaire with simple questions will be given to them.
Their answers will be collected and checked using basic maths (like percentages) to see how
many students feel homesick. We will also look at whether things like age or distance from
home are related to their homesickness.
Before distribution, the questionnaire will be validated by experts in the field of nursing
education and psychology to ensure content validity. A pilot study may also be conducted on
a small sample to ensure clarity and reliability of the tool.
Participants will be given clear instructions and sufficient time to complete the questionnaire.
Confidentiality and anonymity will be strictly maintained throughout the study, and informed
consent will be obtained from all participants.
7
RESULT:
The study is expected to show that a majority of 1st year GNM students experience moderate
to high levels of homesickness, especially those who are living away from home for the first
time. Factors such as distance from home, lack of previous hostel experience, and younger
age may be linked to higher levels of homesickness. These findings highlight the need for
emotional support and adjustment programs for first-year students.
CONCLUSION:
The study highlights that homesickness is a common experience among 1st year GNM
nursing students, especially those adjusting to hostel life and being away from their families
for the first time. Identifying students who feel emotionally low can help teachers and
administrators provide timely support. Creating a caring and friendly environment can reduce
stress and help students adjust better to their new life in nursing school.

Abstract: BACKGROUND:
Adequate water intake is essential for maintaining optimal health. However, awareness regarding the
consequences of insufficient water consumption remains low among young adults, including nursing students.
As future healthcare providers, it is crucial that General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students possess
proper knowledge about hydration and its

OBJECTIVE:
1. To assess the base line knowledge of first year GNM nursing students regarding water consumption.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured teaching program on improving knowledge, attitude and
practice regarding dehydration prevention.
3. To evaluate the difference between the pre-test and post-test score.
4. To find out the association between the pre-test and post-test score with selected demographic
variables.

METHOD:
A pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was used. A total of 60 students from first-year GNM
students were selected using purposive sampling. A structured questionnaire was administered to assess their
baseline knowledge. Following this, a structured teaching program was delivered. After one week, a post-test
was conducted using the same questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

RESULT:
The findings showed a significant improvement in post-test knowledge scores compared to pre-test scores.
Indicating the effectiveness of the structured teaching program in enhancing students’ understanding of the
prevention of less water consumption and its health implications.
6
● The majority of participants (70%) were aged between 17–19 years.
● Most participants (70%) were female
● 85% of students resided in hostels;
● 15% were day scholars.
● 75% of students reported consuming less than 1.5 litres of water daily before the
intervention.
