A Study to Determine the Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme on Knowledge Regarding Sudden Infant Death Syndrome among Third Year Bsc Nursing Students at Selected Nursing College, Bengaluru

Abstract

Background: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) refers to the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under one year of age, typically diagnosed after autopsy, clinical history review, and death scene investigation reveal no identifiable cause. Despite advances in healthcare, awareness and understanding of SIDS among healthcare students remain limited. Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme in enhancing the knowledge of third-year BSc nursing students regarding SIDS. Methodology: A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used. The study included 60 third-year BSc nursing students from SMT Nagarathnamma College of Nursing, Soladevanahalli, Bengaluru, selected through a non-probability purposive sampling technique. A structured knowledge questionnaire was used to assess knowledge before and after the intervention. Results: 32  Pre-test scores: Ranged from 7 to 31, with a mean of 16.58 ± 6.66 and a mean percentage of 51.81%.  Post-test scores: Ranged from 15 to 32, with a mean of 28.55 ± 3.67 and a mean percentage of 89.22%.  Statistical Analysis: A paired t-test revealed a highly significant improvement in knowledge (t(59) = 14.93, p < 0.000).  Knowledge Level Distribution Post-Test:  Inadequate: 1.7%  Moderate: 8.3%  Adequate: 90.0% Conclusion: The structured teaching programme significantly improved knowledge about SIDS among nursing students. These findings highlight the value of planned educational interventions in promoting infant health awareness among future healthcare providers.
