The Architectural Design Project presents a vision to create a unique public space to encourage community bonding over the country’s rich folklore telling and expression. In the age of fast-growing technology, entertainment has taken a new face and identity, which has left the old forms of entertainment with a bleak future and empty theatres. Over the years, theatres have seen a steady decline in its user group. With the rise in cinema, majority of people chose the more affordable commercial source of entertainment. Indian theatre has a history going back at least 5000 years. Every state and province have its own form of storytelling through movement and expression. Traditional theatrical forms are nearly always performed during religious festivals, ceremonial offerings, meetings, and prayers. Vibrant dance dramas of Natyadharmi and Lokadharmi to the depiction of mythological stories using grand costumes and stage props to modern theatre influenced by the west, drama in India offers a plethora of options. But in today’s fast paced lifestyle, the beauty of the stage is rarely appreciated. The space is a blend of earthy tones to make the space inviting and to help blend a contemporary design into the skyline of old Kolkata. Use of locally sourced materials, natural lighting and ventilation, inclusion of open spaces for community enrichment makes this project a sustainable and perfect addition to rich city of Kolkata.en_US
