Abstract

The thesis examines the nature and patterns of a gender-diverse group of people which is not a part of the conventional gender system. The transgender community in India that once flourished under the rule of the Mughal empire is not struggling to make a living. The goal of this project is to understand the underlying cause of their rapid downfall and provide suitable architectural solutions for the same cause. The community has been facing backlash for the hidden causes and unrealistic norms of the society and the need of voicing out their concerns becomes more necessary as time passes. The thesis speaks for the transgender community and the oppressions faced by them, and since their opinions have been muted for such a long time, the Parivartan Alaya ( Parivartan - change, Alaya - abode/ home) which translates to ‘The house of change’ does not only support the gender transforming community but also looks forwards to transforming the conventional mindset of the orthodox people by showing the real side of the transgender community and by proving it to them that the community is as human as the rest of the world. Transgender rehabilitation and interaction center is a place which speaks for itself through its forms, material selection and balance between built and unbuilt spaces
