| Abstract: | This thesis proposes a solution for the global population ages, there is an increasing need for thoughtful, inclusive design in elderly care facilities that not only address physical needs but also enhance emotional, social, and mental well-being. This thesis explores how architectural design , landscaping in old age homes can be strategically integrated , improve the quality of life for elderly residents. The research focuses on creating spaces that foster autonomy, social interaction, mental stimulation, while also incorporating healing environments that support physical health and emotional balance. Central to thesis is the concept of the "activity house"—a multifunctional facility designed to promote a wide range of activities to foster the well-being of the elderly. These activities include physical exercise, creative expression, cognitive stimulation, and social engagement, all tailored to varying ability levels. The study proposes architectural and landscape solutions that create accessible, flexible, and stimulating environments, such as therapeutic gardens, sensory pathways, and communal spaces designed to encourage interaction and connection with nature. The design philosophy emphasizes inclusivity, focuses on universal accessibility, safety, and comfort, while also promoting the dignity and independence of the elderly. The key aspects of the research will include the integration of biophilic design principles, the use of natural materials, and the importance of light, sound, and colour in creating a nurturing environment. Additionally, the thesis will examine the role of outdoor spaces in rehabilitation and social inclusion, investigating the potential of gardens, walking paths, and activity zones in supporting physical health and emotional well-being. Through a case study analysis, design proposals, and theoretical research, this thesis aims to offer a comprehensive framework for the creation of old age homes that not only provide shelter, but actively contribute to the holistic well-being of their residents. Ultimately, the research will argue for a design approach that views the elderly not as passive recipients of care, but as active participants in their own well-being, with environments that encourage engagement, independence, and community connection. This topic could lend itself well to a detailed exploration of design, psychology, and landscape architecture, providing a comprehensive solution for enhancing the quality of life for elderly individuals. |
